TEACHERS CERTIFICATION
The Step by Step methodology has been implemented in preschool and primary school education in 29 countries since 1997. In 2001-2002 an international team of experts developed Step by Step Programme Standard and ISSA Teacher Standard, and the Step by Step Teacher Certification model. The aim of the standards is to establish harmonised requirements to teachers core knowledge, skills, attitudes and teaching methods in accordance with the Step by Step philosophy and methodology. Certification of Step by Step teachers was started in 2003.
The aim of the certification is to assess the contribution of teachers in implementing child-centered education and promoting further professional development of teachers.
Every teacher who uses child-centered methods, meeting the specific needs of the child, considering their age, interests and learning styles and creates stimulating classroom environment, can apply for certification.
In Latvia ISSA Teacher Certificate is awarded by the Centre for Education Initiatives, which is an organisation, accredited by the International Step by Step Association.
ISSA Teacher Standards can be used by every teacher to assess their own practice from the perspective of child-centered education, as well as by other educationalists for quality assessment of the teaching and learning process. These standards should also be communicated to senior university students and representatives of the public. They can also be used by teacher training universities when teaching about child-centered education criteria.
