PROJECT

EUROPEAN DIMENSION IN PARENT EDUCATION

The aims:

  • To establish an international partnership of different organizations from Estonia, Greece and Latvia, which provide parent education in their countries, for enhancement of opportunities and motivation of parents of disadvantaged groups for lifelong learning;
  • To identify the best practices of involvement of adult learners - parents of minority families, parents of families of children with special needs, poor families and other disadvantaged groups - in parent education;
  • To analyse the factors, which promote the most efficient impact on involvement of parents of disadvantaged groups in adult education and its effectiveness;
  • To enhance the knowledge and skills of the partners necessary for successful parent education;
  • Main activities: partners meetings, survey to explore the experience in the participating countries, study visits, sharing of knowlegde and experience by Internet, conference.

    AKTIVITIES

    PARTNERS MEETING 1 in Latvia on 11-14 December 2007

    The representatives of three partner organizations Chrysallis - Close to Disability (Greece), Hea Algus (Estonia) and Centre for Education Initiatives (Latvia) had prepared presentations of the objectives and main activities of their organizations. The business agenda of the meeting included a full day work on reviewing of the Mobility Activities of the project. Considering that two organizations were not approved in the project, the participants of the meeting agreed on the necessary revisions of the mobilities and worked out a detailed work plan.

    The participants visited preschool "Zvanins" in Jekabpils city, which implements international inclusive early childhood education program Step by Step. The preschool is one of the model Step by Step schools in Latvia. The guests visited several classrooms where they met with teachers and teacher assistants. Director Silvija Berzina shared the experience of the preschool in inclusion of children with special needs and involvement of their parents in education. During the visit to the CEI main office in Jekabpils its staff presented the recent and current CEI's projects, activities and publications.

    Partners enjoyed the cultural program: performance in Riga Opera, sightseeing of Riga Old City, Jekabpils and Aglona. They were most excited by the story about the traditional Latvian rye bread and the traditional Latvian dinner in Aglona Bread Museum.

    PARTNERS MEETING in Latvia on 14-17 April 2007

    Two partner organizations met at the Partners meeting in Riga: representatives of the Educational Research Institute, Developmental Research Centre for Pedagogical Initiatives Step by Step (Slovenia) and the Centre for Education Initiatives (Latvia). The meeting was organized additionally to the Partners meeting 1, because the Slovenian partner could not participate at the meeting in December 2007.

    The main objectives of the meeting were to introduce the Slovenian partners with parent education in Latvia and the work of the Latvian partner organization in the field of inclusion of children with disabilities. For that purpose several meetings were organized in different organizations and institutions: the Slovenian partners visited Ogre secondary school and Ogre preschool "Zelta sietins" where they had opportunity to meet teachers, schools' administrators and parents. They also visited Parent support centre in Jekabpils and had opportunity to observe learning activities of parents and children with disabilities.

    The Slovenian and Latvian teams worked together to revise the draft of the
    Parent Survey. 

    The cultural program of the meeting consisted of performance in Riga Opera, sightseeing of the Riga Old City, Jekabpils and Aglona.

    PARTNERS MEETING 2 in Athens on 25 - 27 May 2008

    Representatives of all partner organizations met in Athens. The most important items of the agenda were discussions about the content and design of the project website, and the agreement on the final version of the Parent survey.

    The partners visited the Residential Centre for people with disabilities "CHARA". During their visit, partners met with some of the residents and the staff of the centre. They were introduced with the activities and services of the centre as well as its history. They got information how the teaching process is organized in the centre, what kind of learning materials are used, how the parents are involved in the activities of the centre. The Greek partners of the Chrysallis - Close to Disability shared their experience in cooperation with the personnel of the "Chara".

    The Greek partners organized a guided tour to the historical places of Athens - the Acropolis, the ancient temples, the harbour and the Old City. The guests appreciated possibility to enjoy traditional Greek dinner in accompaniment of the Greek music and dances.
